Full pack dimensions

  • 70 x 37 x 27cm (height x width x depth).

How is the capacity of a pack measured?
  • The capacity of every backpack is measured using a standard method: we fill the main compartment as well as every pocket with small balls. All the balls used are then emptied into a graduated container to measure the pack’s capacity in litres.

  • 3
How to pack a backpackPut sleeping gear at the bottom. Position heavy items (tent, stove, food...) close to the back. Clothes are placed around these. The mattress goes under the hood and a tent can be fixed underneath the backpack if there is no more space inside. Make sure your wind jacket and fleece are easily accessible. Use the pockets to store small items (sun lotion, map, sunglasses,...) that will be needed during the day. Usually, there is a compartment along the back for a hydration pack.

How to adjust the back height:Position the adjustment at the appropriate assumed height then adjust the bag (see "How to adjust your bag?"). With the belt on your pelvis, the straps should go round the front part of your shoulders, and the load adjuster straps (sometimes also height-adjustable) describing an angle of around 45° (they must not go horizontally or vertically). If, in the test, the back seems too short or too long, readjust and try again, until you are satisfied.

Backpack technical tests:Backpack components are approved in lab tests: fabric, buckles, webbing, foam, zips... For example, fabrics are tested for resistance to wear, to tearing, colour-fastness in UV rays, repeated washing, waterproofing... A final test on the finished product simulates the kind of treatment to which it will be subjected over several years, to assess the strength of the assembly. The backpack is weighted then placed on a dummy that then reproduces a fast walking movement through thousands of cycles.

The Symbium 3 systemThe Symbium 3 combines the advantages of the Symbium (freedom of movement) with those of the new exclusive system of 3 pockets easy to move to the front of chest: easy to access multiple objects during walk, and shifting weight towards the front when these pockets are positioned at front. Consequently this helps to better distribute the carrying load and therefore raise the back by approx. 4 degrees. This reduces stress placed on the back and the load is carried with greater ease

"Air Cooling" certification:"Air Cooling"-certified packs are laboratory-tested in order to assess the quality of their ventilation systems: a heated and perspiring mannequin is used to scientifically and objectively measure the pack's capacity to reduce perspiration. This label is only given to packs that perform significantly better than a "basic" model in the range (without any particular cooling system). We also compare them with rival products on the market.

DETAILED INFORMATION

QUECHUA - designed for men wanting all their gear close at hand while on the move on LONG HIKING and TREKKING expeditions.

  • Composition outer fabric: 100% PES; lining: 100% PA; padding: 100% polyurethane.
  • approved by In a blind test comparison with two existing top of the range backpacks (one Quechua and one from a major international brand of mountaineering backpacks) on a hike in the mountains, the Symbium 4 was given the best score for comfort by 81% of the testers (8 men + 8 women).
  • Care instructions We recommend that you do not to machine wash, tumble dry, dry clean, bleach or iron your backpack so that the fabric properties (especially waterproofing) are preserved. TECHNICAL INFORMATION

  • The “Air Cooling” certification. - “Air Cooling”-certified packs are laboratory-tested in order to assess the quality of their ventilation systems: a heated dummy which can produce artificial sweat provides a scientific and objective measurement of the pack’s ability to reduce perspiration. This certification is only given to packs that perform significantly better than a “basic” model in the range (which does not feature any particular ventilation system). We also match them up against rival products on the market.
  • How is the capacity of a pack measured? - The capacity of every backpack is measured using a standard method: we fill the main compartment as well as every pocket with small balls. All the balls used are then emptied into a graduated container to measure the pack’s capacity in litres.
  • How to pack a backpack. - Put sleeping gear at the bottom.
  • How to fit a backpack. - LOOSEN all the straps (shoulder straps, hip belt, tensioners). PUT THE BACKPACK ON. For backpacks with a capacity of 50L or more, PLACE THE HIP BELT CORRECTLY (over the hip bones) and FASTEN IT. For smaller backpacks, the hip belt should be placed around the waist. TIGHTEN THE SHOULDER STRAPS. Finally, ADJUST THE TENSIONERS to your personal requirements.
  • How to adjust the backpack’s back length - Set the back length system as best you can and then fit the backpack (see the “How to fit a backpack” section). With the hip belt on the hips, the shoulder straps should cover the front area of your shoulders, and the tensioners (which are also sometimes adjustable in height) should be at a 45° angle (and not in a vertical or horizontal position). If you feel the back is too short or too long, restart the process until you feel comfortable.
  • The Symbium system. - The Symbium pivoting belt and the shoulder strap elastics allow the shoulders and hips lots of freedom of movement. This reduces the stress at the shoulder straps and belt thereby making it more comfortable for long hikes.
  • Backpack technical tests. - Backpack components are approved in laboratory tests: fabrics; buckles; straps; padding; zips... For example, fabrics are tested for resistance to abrasion, tearing, UV rays, repeated washing, waterproof properties, etc… A final test on the finished product simulates the kind of treatment to which it will be subjected over several years, to assess the strength of the assembly. A fully loaded backpack is put on a dummy to simulate the movements of a fast-walking hiker over thousands of cycles.
  • The Symbium 4 system. - The Symbium 4 system reduces the forces exerted on your back by almost 8% when compared to a traditional backpack. The Symbium 4 elastic allows the pack the "bounce" thereby aiding the person to propel themself forwards. The Symbium 4 elastic absorbs the shockwave of the bag on the back. This results in a 720 g reduction for each step for a 20kg bag, that is, 31 metric tons less on the back for a 6-hour hike and a reduction in the effort required by the walker.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

  • The “Air Cooling” seal of approval. - Rucksacks which feature the “Air Cooling” seal of approval have been laboratory-tested in order to assess the performance of their ventilation system: a heated dummy which can produce artificial sweat provides a scientific and objective measurement of the rucksack’s ability to reduce perspiration. Only the rucksacks that perform significantly better than a “basic” model in the range (which do not feature any particular ventilation system) are awarded this seal of approval.
  • How is the capacity of a rucksack measured? - The capacity of each of our rucksacks is measured as per a standardised method: we fill the main compartment as well as every pocket with small balls. All the balls used are then emptied into a graduated container to give the rucksack’s capacity in litres.
  • How to pack a rucksack - Put sleeping equipment at the bottom. Position heavy items close to the back. Clothes can be placed all around these. You can put a mattress under the lid and a tent can be fixed underneath the rucksack if there is no room left inside. Make sure your wind jacket and fleece jacket are easily accessible. Use the pockets to store the small accessories you will need during the hike. Usually, there is a compartment along the back which is designed to hold a water pouch.
  • How to fit a rucksack - LOOSEN all the straps (shoulder strap, hip belt, tensioners). PUT THE RUCKSACK ON YOUR BACK. For rucksacks with a capacity of 50L or more, PLACE THE HIP BELT CORRECTLY (over the hip bones) and FASTEN IT. For rucksacks with a smaller capacity, the hip belt should be placed around the waist. FASTEN THE SHOULDER STRAPS. Finally, ADJUST THE TENSIONERS to your personal requirements.
  • How to adjust the rucksack’s back length - Position the adjustable back system as indicated as standard then fit the rucksack. With the hip belt over your waist, the shoulder straps should cover the front area of your shoulders, and the tensioners (which are also sometimes adjustable in height) should be at a 45° angle (and not in a vertical or horizontal position). If you feel the back is too short or too long, restart the process until you feel comfortable.
  • The Symbium 3 system. - Symbium 3 combines the advantages of the Symbium system (freedom of movement) and those of the new exclusive 3 adjustable chest pockets system: these provide easy access to many items while walking, and also ensure a better balance of the load by straightening the back by approximately 4°. Stress on the back is therefore reduced, providing extra comfort when carrying the rucksack.
  • Rucksack technical tests. - Before the components of a rucksack are given our stamp of approval, they are submitted to a series of laboratory tests. For example, a fabric will be tested for its resistance to abrasion, tearing, UV rays, repeated washing, watertight properties, etc… A final test on the finished product is carried out in order to reproduce the kind of treatment it is likely to be subjected to over the years. The heavily-weighted rucksack is put on a dummy which imitates the movements of a fast-walking hiker.
